A "write-in" candidate is afforded all the privileges of a certified candidate, except that their name is not typed on the ballot.  If you wish to vote for any write-in candidate, you must spell their name so that it is clear to the Election Commissioners for whom you wish to vote.

There is a vacancy on the Municipal Election Commission. You must be a town resident and registered voter to serve as a commissioner. Terms are six years. PUBLIC NOTICE - Town of Surfside Beach

General Election – Tuesday, April 3, 2018

 

Candidate filing has closed for the April 3, 2018 General Election. 

The Town of Surfside Beach Municipal Election Commission announces that a General Election for the Town of Surfside Beach will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 to elect three Town Councilmembers.  Polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.  This is a nonpartisan election and no reference to party affiliation will be placed on the ballot.

Offices included:  Three (3) Town Council Seats to fill a term beginning May 8, 2018 and ending May 10, 2022.

Polling Locations:  Surfside #1:  Dick M. Johnson Civic Center, 829 N Pine Drive, Surfside Beach.  Surfside #2 and Surfside #4:  Surfside United Methodist Church, 800 13th Avenue N, Surfside Beach. 

Qualifications for Voting:  Last date to register to vote in this election is Friday, March 2, 2018.  Surfside Beach electors must present a valid photo identification pursuant SC Code §7-13-710. Contact Horry County Board of Voter Registration (843.915.5440), or visit www.scvotes.org to register.  You may vote in any runoff election, if you did not vote on April 3rd. However, you must be registered to vote on or before March 2nd to vote in the runoff as it is a continuation of the General Election.

Absentee Ballots:  Absentee ballots must be requested from the Horry County Elections office (843.915.5440) no later than Friday, March 2, 2018.  You may vote absentee in person at Horry County Elections & Registration, 1515 4th Avenue, Conway, until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2018. 

The Municipal Election Commission (MEC) will begin the process of examining return-addressed absentee envelopes at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day in Council Chambers, 115 US Highway 17 North, Surfside Beach, SC. The MEC will tabulate unofficial results as soon as possible after polls close.

Challenged Ballot & Certification Hearing will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., at Surfside Beach Council Chambers, 115 US Highway 17 North, Surfside Beach, SC. 

Protests:  Candidate protest must be filed in writing by 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018 in the office of the town clerk.

Run-Off Election:  Any run-off election, if necessary, will be held two weeks after the election on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. You do not have to vote on April 3rd to vote in any runoff; however, you must be registered to vote on or before March 2nd, as a runoff is a continuation of the General Election. 

Successful Candidate. The successful candidate must receive a majority of the votes cast for the seat for which he or she has filed.  Majority is calculated by totaling the number of votes cast for the seat, and dividing by 3, and then dividing the result by 2.  A number in excess of the majority is required to be considered successful.  If one or more candidates receive a number of votes in excess of the majority, then the candidate or candidates with the highest number of votes shall be deemed successful.

Municipal Election Commission Information  

          

Term:  6 years

Duties:  The Election Commission is charged with conducting the town’s elections which are held during every even numbered year.

Qualifications:  Commissioners must be residents and registered electors of the Town.  Training is required and provided for appointees.

Meeting Schedule:  Commissioners meet to prepare for upcoming elections; visit the voting precincts and tabulate ballots on Election Day, and hold a challenged ballot hearing after Election Day.
