On the weekend of October 8, 2016, Surfside Beach was hit by Hurricane Matthew, the first category 5 Atlantic hurricane since 2007. Matthew was down to a category 2 by the time it hit the South Carolina coast. Despite the downgrade in strength, Matthew hit hard. Our pier suffered extensive damage, losing over 50 percent of its length and scattering debris from Ocean Lakes to Garden city. It was a devastating blow.
Due to the damage, we expect the fishing portion of the pier to be closed for all of 2017, and at least half of 2018. This is the very best case scenario. The town is currently evaluating its options to rebuild or repair the pier and how to obtain financing to cover the damage. There will be three workshops held in monthly increments from February through April to hear public input on this matter. Meanwhile, we will be updating this page as we make progress. Thank you to everyone for your support, and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook for further updates. For a video of the damage to area piers, click here.
