Speaking of which, KSBB is having the next “Beach Sweep” on September 19, 2020, from 9-10 AM.  Bags and gloves will be provided.  Enter a chance to win a Pizza Hyena Gift Certificate.  Please join us as we

It was reported today that the construction project on Business 17 is just about completed.  There are a few things left on the punch list, but the barrels have started to be removed.  There are a few issues with the traffic signals that still need to be addressed.  Also, street lights need to be installed.  This work will be done by Santee Cooper and not SCDOT.  Santee Cooper should start the installation of the street lights in the next week or two.  This will start at Rt 544 and work their way to Melody Lane.  The project should be completed in the next month or so.

With the tourist season coming to an end, and children starting their new hybrid schedule, it is even more important for us to maintain our social distancing and wearing a mask.  This is not only to protect yourself but others.  Let’s all work together to keep the numbers down.

Tomorrow (Patriot Day) will be nineteen years since the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and just outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  A total of 2,977 people were killed.  This event in American History should never be forgotten.  Each year a moment of silence is observed to correspond with the attacks, beginning at 8:46 a.m. (EDT), the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

We all should be aware that it is that time of year to look at hurricane safety and planning.  A copy of the South Carolina Hurricane Guide for 2020 can be obtained by using this link: https://scemd.org/stay-informed/publications/hurricane-guide/

Last night was the regular Town Council Meeting.  The agenda was light.  The only Business item was the vote to award the bid on the pier.  After a motion was made by Mr. Pellegrino, and seconded by Mr. Drake we had a brief discussion.  Mr. Duckett, the Interim Town Administrator, read a letter from Collins Engineering outlining their evaluation of the bidders.  They stated that all of the bidders were qualified.  They also outlined the marine contractor working with Consensus Construction.  Mr. Duckett read the bulleted points from their letter that outlined some of their marine projects.  They finished the letter stating that Consensus Construction is the lowest and most responsive bidder.  A vote was taken to award the bid, and the result was 7-0 with all council member voting in favor.

We now have a number of tasks ahead to prepare to start construction.  We need to have the contract prepared.  We need to finalize the arrangement to have our tenant vacate the premises, and we need to appoint a Town Representative to oversee the project.  If everything works out, we should have everything wrapped up in the next thirty days.  This means that construction may begin by October 15th.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed.  Again, much appreciation to our Interim Town Administrator and his hard work.

During our pier workshop last Thursday, we were given information by the engineer and architect about the current three bidders on the pier restoration project.  The engineer had stated that he needed to obtain more information to make a decision.  Council asked them to provide this information by the close of business on Friday so we would be able to review it and be prepared to vote this evening.  The results from the engineer came in and we will be voting to award the pier project this evening.  With limited space available, please call in to hear the results of the recommendation from the engineer and architect, and the vote to award the bid.  You can dial in using your phone. (Toll Free) 1 866 899 4679 or U.S:  1 (571) 317-3116.  The Access Code is 569-705-805.  This brings us one step closer to having our new pier.

Well today was the first day of school.  Students will be returning using the hybrid model, 2 days in school, 3 days distance learning.  Busses will be running and kids will be out and about more then usual.

Please be mindful of the children.  We all wish them the best in this new adventure in learning

As many residents have noticed, the sign for Johnny D’s Waffle House is up.  I dropped by and spoke with them today. They have not set an opening date yet. They need to hire help first.  We look forward to having them in our community.

Also, Santorini Gyro House and Homemade Ice Cream is now open.  They are located between Fat Jack’s and Valentino’s on Business 17.  Again, welcome to our town.

Today was the workshop on the Pier Restoration Project.  We started out hearing from Diana King, the Finance Director.  She explained, in detail, the monies that are allocated for the building of the pier, along with the other expenses.  We were happy to hear that we have enough money, based on the current bids, to build the pier without raising taxes.  We also heard from the architect (LS3P) and engineering firm (Collins Engineering).  They were able to answer all of our questions.  There was one

question that went unanswered, but they assured us that they would provide the answer to that

question by Friday afternoon.  We were informed by the Interim Town Administrator that our request for an extension for the FEMA Grant has been forwarded from the State level to the Federal level for review.  If all of the information is provided, we will be able to award the bid at next Tuesday’s regular Town Council Meeting and the need for the FEMA extension will not be required.

There are only four more days left to register for “FALL BALL” with the Surfside Beach Youth Sports Association.  They are looking forward to seeing their players returning and they will send out more information on the season after registration closes.  Don’t forget that they need volunteers to coach!  They need T-ball, coach pitch and advanced coach pitches coaches the most!   For more information, check out their Facebook Page:

Just to keep everyone informed, the grass on Rt 17 Business is getting long again and SCDOT has assured us that their contractor will be cutting it again in the next few weeks.  A special thanks to John Adair

For keeping on top of this.

I would also like to thank the group of residents that reached out requesting more information about the pier other ongoing issues in the town.  It was nice to sit down with a group of concerned residents at the 9th Ave beach access and have a constructive discussion on where we are and where we are going. It is good to see residents that are concerned and want to be informed of the issues.

As schools is getting started and the numbers seem to be more stable, it is important to remember that this is only because of the efforts that everyone has done to contribute to the success of this initiative.  We need to keep doing what we are doing to ensure that the numbers continue to decrease.  Remember to social-distance and always where a mask when in public.

A Special Meeting was held today at 10:00 AM for an Executive Session with Town Council on the tentative agreement between the City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County pertaining to the Hospitality Tax Fee lawsuit.  After the presentation was made by the attorney, we returned to the public meeting to present a motion to authorize the Mayor to sign an agreement in principle with Horry County and the City of Myrtle Beach, which I did so do.  While we did sign an agreement in principle, the details of this settlement remain confidential and cannot be discussed until finalized by the judge. If all goes well, the judge’s decision in this matter may be expected by September 16, 2020.  This is a tentative date…
