Mayor Hellyer’s Weekly Update

February 24, 2023

PIER NEWS! The main pier sections are now complete. The temporary trestle is being removed and we are in the final steps of completion. All the stakeholders are working together to get this project done. There is still a lot of work to do before the opening.

We have a new Town Events & Social Media Coordinator -- Congratulations go to Tabitha Mull. She has taken off running…We know she will be doing a great job for our town.

Last week in my update, I stated that the parking machines will accept credit cards. I stand corrected. All parking payments will be made through the “text to park” app.

We launched the beginning of our Comprehensive Plan this week. Several meetings were held between our contractors, the Planning Commission, and stakeholders throughout the day.  Starting at 5:00 PM, many residents participated in the Drop-in session for the opportunity to submit suggestions, ideas, comments, and their thoughts about subject areas like transportation, the environment, development, communication, etc. I want to thank Director Sabrina Adair, of Permitting, Building & Zoning and Sheri Medina, Town Clerk for the weeks of work it took to set this up.  Thank you to Planning Commission members for your continued commitment and support. To the residents who took the time to come and talk to us and each other, give their feedback, and provide their written contributions, you have started us off towards planning for the future of our town. There will be more to come.

The BBQ Festival is just around the corner. I am keeping my fingers crossed we will be blessed with good weather!  I know the food, entertainment and the booths will all be good. Be sure to visit all the towns booths, too. There will be lots of information available.

Join us for the Surfside Beach Barbecue Festival 2023

Starts on Friday, March 3rd from 4-7 with “Anything but BBQ” in the Yaupon Parking lot.

Saturday March 4th from 10-4. There will be plenty of vendors with lots of good food to eat

Come with your family, neighbors, and friends. Try some good BBQ. Take lots of pictures. See you there!

Mark your calendars to attend the Arbor Day Ceremony on April 28th at 10:00.  Location to be determined.

Stay safe and God Bless …
