Mayor Hellyer’s Weekly Update
March 17, 2023
Happy St Patrick’s Day to everyone. If you are celebrating this evening, please be sure to have a designated driver and alternative transportation planned and stay safe.
I would like to address the recent pier construction delays that were discussed at the town council meeting on Tuesday. To set the record straight, we did not learn that there would be another delay with completing the pier construction until earlier in the week, and when we did, we immediately notified the public of our concerns. In the spirit of transparency, these delays are not the fault of any of our local stakeholders.
There are two critical issues. The first is with the “fire suppression system” which requires a schedule for inspections to be conducted to ensure public safety. The second issue is the security system. The town originally decided that the security system would be installed after construction was completed. However, the cost to do so has become astronomical. After a very careful evaluation, we decided to have the security system installed during construction to save on cost and in the interest of public safety, which will result in a delay. It is unfortunate, but delays like these are problems that every construction project must deal with. I will continue to keep you posted.
