A ride to remember

Ashley G Ride

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (Aug. 1, 2022) - Three-thousand-one-hundred-and-fifty miles, from coast-to-coast covering 11 states in 42 days. Surfside Beach area resident James Brown has had quite the summer.

Brown, 62, embarked on the journey starting from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA on June 20 to raise money and support for the Ashley G. Foundation, a foundation named after Ashley Beth Gaines, a Grand Strand teen who passed away in 2008 after battling cancer. Brown was Gaines' tennis coach in high school. This was the 10th Ashley G. Ride and the longest to date.

A cousin rode the first 1,800 miles with Brown until Kansas City. Some 15 riders joined Brown at points throughout the arduous ride.

The ride finished here in Surfside Beach on Saturday, July 30, at the 4th Ave. S. beach access. Upon arriving, Brown dismounted and walked his bike across the beach to deep his wheels in the Atlantic Ocean. Met by family and friends, he received a hug from his wife for a job well done.
