[ARCHIVED] Mayor Hellyer's Weekly Update - Sept. 9, 2022

Mayor Hellyers Weekly Update

On Wednesday, September 7, we celebrated the first Surfside Beach Employee Appreciation Day with a luncheon for all the staff at the civic center followed by a reception with music as residents joined in at Memorial Park. Thank you to all of the residents who took the time to come thank these employees for their hard work and dedication. My hat’s off to every one of them.

Sunday, September 11, at 4 p.m. in Memorial Park, Music in the Park will feature the band, “Carolina Soul.” The weather forecast is calling for an 88% chance of rain. I hope I don’t jinx it but we shall see … There are only two more weeks of Music in the Park this season.

On September 16, 17, and 18 the town will hold its second hazardous household waste collection for the year. You can bring items to the Public Works Facility on Sandy Lane here in Surfside Beach. Please be aware that these items are banned from curbside collection. Please do your part to protect our environment by recycling and proper disposal.

Hazardous Waste Drop Off information

September 17 is the next Beach Sweep and this event will be in conjunction with the statewide Beach Sweep / River Sweep event. KSBB will coordinate with other jurisdictions to help report the trash collection data for state statistics. You report for duty from 9 to 10 a.m. at the 3rd Ave N. beach access. Bring your kids, neighbors and friends. Come show your support and help us in this effort. Your participation will be rewarded. This is such a good thing!

September 24 is the “Celebrate Surfside Beach” festival from 11 to 3 p.m. This event is being sponsored by local businesses. There will be food, drink, music, kid-friendly events and other entertainment, including a dunking booth! The fun begins on 3rd Avenue South to Surfside Drive. Wear comfortable shoes, bring portable chairs, and park safely!

Surfside Beach’s Fall Festival is fast approaching October 1st. It is going to be a great time with food, drink, music and many vendor booths, as well as the town and volunteer committee booths chalked full of information. Bring the kids and have a great day outdoors.

Calling all gardeners to save this date.  Saturday, October 22, at 1 p.m. on Our Community Garden Committee is hosting the 2nd SC Master Gardener Forum in the Community Garden (at the corner of Hollywood & 10th Ave South). Come join the discussion, questions / answers, learn from their suggestions about tips and tricks for fall/winter gardening. Take lots of pictures. The recent rain showers have been a big help for the new little seedlings.

Stay safe and God Bless!
