Yesterday, Governor Henry McMaster signed Executive Order 2022-28 declaring a state of emergency and activating the state’s emergency operations plan, which enables state agencies to prepare for Hurricane Ian’s potential impact. The governor’s order directs the SC Emergency Management Division to coordinate with all relevant state agencies and to be prepared to respond to any requests for state assistance from county emergency managers.
Today at 9 a.m., I signed a DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR THE TOWN OF SURFSIDE BEACH. A copy of this Declaration can be found on the Town’s website. This declaration enables our town to receive FEMA funding to help with any damages and clean-up from this incident.
Our Public Works Department has been preparing for this storm. Our lakes have been lowered to enable the retention of additional flood waters, the hanging baskets have been removed throughout the town so as not to create a hazard during the expected winds, and sand has been placed at Martin field for residents’ needs.
The Police and Fire Departments have opened the Emergency Communication System and are currently operating at OPCON 2. This is expected to be raised to OPCON 1 at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
As of noon today, the National Weather Service has issued a HURRICANE WARNING as well as a STORM SURGE WARNING for Surfside Beach. These warnings are issued up to 36 hours before hazardous conditions begin.
All residents are asked to please prepare for this storm by taking efforts to protect life and property. Have food, water, cash, fuel, and medication on hand for 3+ days. It’s better to be prepared for the worse.
I request that all residents shelter in place during the storm. Please stay inside as high winds will be dangerous. While no restrictions or curfew are being set, please try to stay inside until the storm passes. Also, please keep a watch over your neighbors.
With everyone’s help, we will get through this with minimal impact.
