[ARCHIVED] Mayor Hellyer's Weekly Update - Oct. 14, 2022

Mayor Hellyers Weekly Update

Let me briefly talk about the “Stop Work Order” on the pier. The order was issued on Oct. 7, because the plans for the redesign of the buildings, which occurred during the value engineering phase of construction, did not properly reflect the plans on file, as they should. Since then, the Administrator, Planning, Building and Zoning, and the Certified Building Inspector have been working to correct all the requirements necessary for the order to be lifted. As of this morning, we can expect the building structures will resume work soon. The stop work order was issued specifically for the buildings and does not affect the rest of the pier (i.e., placement of the pylons over the water).

A reminder to all that Wednesday, Oct. 26, is the Fall Quarterly Citizens’ Workshop in the Civic Center. The Town of Surfside Beach needs to hear from the public about what direction we should take over the next 5 to 10 years. With the help of our citizens, we will conduct a SWOT analysis, identifying our town’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.
Please let us know if you are coming. To RSVP go to: https://www.surfsidebeach.org/citizensworkshop.

Saturday, Oct. 29, is going to be an eventful day with several events.
Halloween Rod Run Car Show from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Surfside Drive. This event is sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Car Club. There are always great cars on display. Come out and join the fun.

The 4th Annual Beast of the Beach Meatball Challenge will be held in the Yaupon Parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Local restaurants, food trucks, caterers and home chefs will enter their meatballs to compete for “Best Beach Balls.”

The Halloween Golf Cart Parade at 3 p.m. Carts will line up at the old Town Hall parking lot at 1:30 pm. The parade will start promptly at 3 p.m. The route will travel down Surfside Drive to Ocean Blvd. Come join the fun. Decorate your carts for prizes!
Please register at https://www.surfsidebeach.org/golfcartparade

I hope to see you at the annual ‘rescheduled’ Surfside Beach Family Festival Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be fun for the whole family with bounce houses, a petting zoo, live music and much more. Admission is free. This event brings thousands of people from all over the Grand Strand for good food, good fun and family-friendly activities.

Save this date - Thursday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for the Seniors Fair at the Surfside Beach Fire Station. Booths will be set up with professionals ready to provide information and resources on senior care, estate planning, checking your blood pressure, giving flu shots, and lots of giveaways. Thank you to the Fire Department for hosting this for us.

As always, there is a lot going on around town… Stay safe and God Bless!
