SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (May 17, 2022) - The Worrell 1000 Race, a catamaran boat race, returned this year following a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.
And with the return to racing, the event returned to Surfside Beach as one of its multiple stops up the east coast.
The approximately 1000-mile race was established in 1976.
The race started on May 9, in Hollywood FL, and will conclude on May 21, in Virginia Beach VA.
Boats arrived at Surfside Beach, Monday night, May 16, from Folly Beach.
Team Clean Sailors, Christopher Green/Matthieu Manfaing, were the first team to arrive, shortly before 4 p.m.
Team Rudee's, Randy Smyth/Dalton Tebo, and Team Allen, William Sunnucks/Mark Self, from the UK were the second and third teams to arrive.
Thirteen teams representing six different countries, including Australia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and the UK, are competing this year.
Wednesday morning, before racers launched for the next leg of the race, town council members got a chance to meet some of the racers to talk with them about the race, what it takes to compete, and wish them well on their journey.
Many onlookers also showed up to watch the excitement firsthand.
Albeit a short stay, racers and the race committee say they appreciate the support from the Town. "The Race Committee of the Worrell 1000 Race is deeply grateful for the hospitality and engagement that the Town and its elected officials showed us for our brief stop on our way to Virginia. We are looking forward to collaborating on future events," said Worrell 1000 communications director Beverly Simmons.
The race teams launched at 10 a.m. Tuesday, for the 8th leg of the competition, headed for Wrightsville Beach, NC.
